could see if Commview is any use - it is available on a 30 day demo then it

$99 (although you might need the enterprise version Mark
!)
There is also etherpeek which is much more capable (and
expensive)

As I've said
before, our firewall is a managed service, and, while that's great for
reliabilty/cost, it's hard to get ad hoc reports out of it.
I need
to
work out how much bandwidth a (proprietary) client-server app is using...
can anyone recommend a (free) packet sniffer/analyser that I can install on
the client PC?
