As ever, the faster you drive it, the more likely you are to have
problems.
I assume you're running no faster than 100Mb/sec at the moment... if you
move to ATM (yeah, right, 'cos that's a domestic standard!) or Gigabit
ethernet, you may find that you get too many errors.

I have CAT5 running alongside (as in actually touching) mains for a
lot more than 5 metres in places and have not found any problems yet.
