To answer your "portable" argument, I could say ReplayTV :-) ... but I
agree, it's still a few years away before more than 10% of the population
will
be receptive to that.
The metaphor set that I'm using:
cassette -> VCR
CD player -> DVD player
MP3 -> PVR
CD recorder -> DVD recorder (again, doesn't particular
matter which flavour)
Anyone know how MP3 players are selling against CD recorders in the
domestic environment?
I think that PVR + massively cheaper HDDs (inevitable) + broadband
will
have an effect...
... as ever, we'll trail the USA by about 2-3 years :-)

Yes and no
Mark.
The advantage in a
“normal” consumer’s eyes is that the DVDR format is portable to other
locations, a PVR by its nature is not and when
discussing
the likes of TiVo with people that are not as
tech
orientated as we are this is the one thing that kills the argument in their
favour. Personally, I can live with a PVR and indeed do, but when some
relative asks me to record something it’s a pain in the ass to do it and
the
quality, even from S-VHS is not brilliant, but then I can’t use S-VHS
cassettes because the vast majority of people I know do not have a VHS deck
capable of playing them back.
However, most of
them
do have a DVD deck that is fairly recent, so suits me, suits them. ;)
Remember also that
most consumers know what a VHS deck is, they know
what a DVD deck is but many have not got the first clue what a PVR
is.

Seriously, though - do we think DVD-(some
recordable
format) is going to beat PVR technology?
Personally, I think that PVR will win in the
consumer
space.)
(Jason - please comment here, particularly if you
disagree - I'd far rather have someone eloquent and opinionated arguing
against me than 100 yes-men !)

Yeah, and would we change that for the world?
