I think they are two different things Mark.  A DVD recorder has some of the disadvantages of a VCR, mainly hunting for A. a blank disk to record on or B. trying to find the disk you recorded last weeks 6 Feet Under on :)
 
For *me* a DVD recorder would be a method of archiving off the TiVo either to keep or share the program.  Also a DVD recorder (equiped with firewire) would be a great way to distribute my DV camcorder footage to the family.
