Re: Some DVD bargains if you're interested, including DVDR!
Ken, I'm pretty sure that dvd-r is the most compatible format. Its worked
o=
n
every player I've tried.

Follow the dv.com link from that forum for a very good article on
compatibility..

Let me wrap up with a few general guidelines to help you get the most out
o=
f
recordable DVD. These suggestions are based on the results of the
testing
and my experiences working with recordable DVD drives and media for the
pas=
t
five years.
1. Use DVD-RW or DVD+RW for internal testing. Find a DVD player that
supports either DVD-RW or DVD+RW (or both) and use it for internal
testing.=
Because you can rewrite these discs, you will save money over using a
write-once format such as DVD-R for Authoring, DVD-R for General, or
DVD+R.=
2. Use DVD-R for external testing or final product delivery. Because
you
probably can't control what type of DVD player the end users have, it's
bes=
t
to send them DVD-R discs. DVD-RW and DVD+RW are still significantly
less
compatible than DVD-R, so it is better to be safe than sorry. Also,
DVD-R
media are much cheaper than either DVD-RW or DVD+RW.
"
He did not test +R as he had no drive or media, the +R rather than +RW
variant is fairly new. Hell, some of the first gen dvd-rw drives can't
even=
be upgraded to write to it. Look at the hp class action in the states..
I don't think either media will disappear, so it's kind of a win-win.
But
then, when I bought mine +RW wasn't around so it was a no brainer.
If anyone's thinking of getting a DVD writer and wants to check
compatibility look at www.vcdhelper.com for a list of tested dvd
players..<=

That said, thats a very nice price!

Subject: [ukha_d] Some DVD bargains if you're interested, including
DVDR!
It so happens I was in a shop I tend to frequent rather a lot yesterday
and I have been offered some bargain DVD players.
They are as follows:
Panasonic DVD-XV10 (Multi-Region) =A3179
Panasonic DVD RV 32EBS (Muti-Region) =A3159.99
And the beauty is the new Philips DVDR880 deck which works like a VCR
for =A3399! There are *very* limited supplies of this machine at this
price and I am unsure as to whether it will be Multi-Region enabled at
this price, but it is =A370 or so cheaper than I have seen it anywhere.
For those of you worried about DVD standards, as I see you have been
debating of late, the Philips system is supposed to be the most
backwards compatible system although it is a *very* confusing muddle
that they've gotten themselves into on this issue. The format used is
+R/+RW for recording for which media is more expensive as it stands,
but
if Philips start a price war like this with the hardware for consumer
players and offer backwards compatibility I would go with it and,
indeed, I have! ;)
If anyone is wants to buy any of these can you mail me off-list.
BTW, these are cost prices out the shop, I am not making a bean out of
it!
K.
