Spookily Mark, I’ve ended up with the same combo, not quick but I remember from when I did my blind tests it was pretty good. I’m encoding using the –r3mix parameters for VBR which gives around 6-7x compression. Not huge, but close to CD in quality terms. Means I’ll be able to get the equivalent of around 40 CDs in the changer with me – not to be sniffed at.

I've ended up with EAC, with the LAME encoder - www.mp3dev.org

I've read a number of review which say it's the best quality.
