I find as well that when it says its run out of power, if you remove and
reinsert the battery pack you get another 8 or so shots with flash.  Then
the red light comes on again, so take the batteries out again and you get
some more.

Probably get about 24 pictures after the first battery run out warning.
Mines got the new firmware as well.
