After some muttering and fiddling it turned out to be the cable from
the phone socket to my old 56k analogue modem! Replaced it, works fine
now.

I have no idea how this lead I've been using for years now suddenly
failed whilst in use. I must have had a broken wire in it that the
folding back and forth eventually broke.
