I think I mentioned that it 'can' be a bad idea?
Saying that, I'm about to run about 8 Cat5e cables outside for data and
phone use in an outbuilding.  I'm going to run them in a 60mm duct buried
about a foot underground.
APC do a range of lightning suppressors for use with Cat5.

Also, because our house is situated on its own and has quite a high
probability of getting hit by lightning, I'm considering installing a
lightning conductor.
