I have used CAN, it is good but I think it might be overkill for HA use,
you could look at triangle digital they do some CAN, also Alan Bradley
Controls (spelling) TDS link can be found here

Microchip also do some CAN bits, some
where I have a development system for it. There was also a very good CAN
site but I cannot remember it, if it come back to be I will post it.
