I have used Zonealarm, its free and has quite a straight forward GUI
interface.  Best thing to do with it is install the standard setup, then as
each program requests outwards access it prompts you to decide what type of
access you want to give it.  On the inward side you can set it up to either
allow, stop entry or have a stealth appearance where it doesn't even
respond to a ping request.

Once it's up and running go to the Shield Up site http://www.grc.com and it
will check your security.

The cheapest IMO is Linux, because it's free :-) If you dont have broadband
to download the ISO images I can send you a copy of either Debian or
Mandrake
Linux.

I believe Zonealarm for Windows is also free if you prefer (but if Mark
asks,
I didn't tell you about that :-) I don't what what else this requires
