Are you using a Creative 5.1 Platinum series??  If so the XP drivers dont work right.  Get the update from the creative website.

Have you tried resetting the sound properties, volume, in the control
panel or in the software that comes with the sound card, I have had
problems with Creative's efforts along these lines.
