I have 8 x 50-watt wire wound sealed units powering my 8 LV downlights in my lounge. All work very well, and no noticable noise. The only noise I seemed to get was from the B&Q lights I fitted - I replaced them with Philips ones - and problem solved.

In theory a wire-wound transformer (as opposed to switch-mode) such as order
code VJ12N from Maplins shouldn't affect X10 signals. I haven't tried it
though so I can't vouch for it personally. Have a look at the bottom of this
