Hi,
I have used the ASUS 6000EV from www.solwise.co.uk it is an ethernet
modem/router with firewall built in. You can indeed run a server with
a
single static IP address & make it availble to the world. I have done
this
with email, www & FTP servers. They also do a model with built in
HUB
USB has bad press but this probably mostly the
BT
'green frog' and via chipsets. Ethernet is the best option for more than
one
machine.
Spitters seem confusing with some saying one
for
each phone is required. I dont think this to be true, phones can be wired
off
the back of the BT master as normal. The modem requires the spliter. It
works
for me anyway.

Subject: [ukha_d] ADSL - connecting /
Distributing
Hi all
I have decided to take the plunge and
get
ADSL, and am going to connect with Eclipse Internet.
Anyhow this
is
a "wires only" install, and not being a networking whizz kid, I have a
few
questions:
1, This service has a static IP option, if I opt for
this,
and enable my Homeseer web Interface, can I then access remotely over
ADSL?
- connecting to the x.x.x.x:8080 (Homeseer is on port 8080)
2, I
need to consider security on this connection, I have been using
Zone alarm
on my Dial up, is this good enough to use on ADSL, or should I
be considering something a little more heavy duty?
3, Sharing
this
connection, - I have looked at the Vigor ADSL USB router, that also
includes a firewall, would there be a noticeable performance difference,
between using the Win2k network sharing and the router - I have 2/3 PCs
max.
4, Currently my Phone line is shared round the house using a
patch
panel, - on this basis can I get away with using 1 splitter, and then
feeding the relevant signals from this into the patch panel, thus
removing
the need for lots of ADSL port splitters? - has anyone tried
this?
Anything else I should be thinking
about?
Thanks
Daniel
