I could Dim to Zero and then send the off command, yes it would work well when you dim lights to off, but as you point out the  problem comes, (and hence my reasoning to do this) When you want to turn a light on in the middle of the night...

 

If you have sent the command "Off" to the LM, next time you turn it on, to for example a 30% preset dim, X10 sends the module the command "On" first and then Dim to X% - so the light comes on bright and then dims down.

 

Whereas if it has been dimmed to 0% then when you send the command - dim to 30% it would then slowly brighten to 30% brightness. Which is great if you want to turn a light on at night without waking your partner....

 

But the downside seems to be the very small amount of electricity wasted in the mean time.
