not suggesting you buy from here, but I've used these things before and
they're
fine as long as you're not hanging too much weight. Don't need to worry
about
joists this way...

I believe you can also get metal plugs that a spring loaded and
open up behind the plasterboard to spread the weight further...

Is there a standard spacing for ceiling joists? I need a solid
ceiling fixing, but don't have access to the floor above. I think I
know where one joist is, but don't want to have to drill random holes
to locate a second. The house is victorian, but the ceiling is
plasterboard, but no fixings are visible.
