Hard Disk question

This might be a dumb question (I am full of them); but what happens if you
if you connect a Maxtor DiamondMax+ D740 (with ATA-133) to a controller
that
only has ATA-100.

Does the drive simply fall back to ATA-100, or does it drop to a much
_lowest common denominator_ speed?
