Your best bet is to lower resolution to either 800x600 or 640x480.  I run
640x480 on a 28" widescreen TV which is fine for text.  Also, you may
wish
to change the GUI to make it easier.  I use Talisman 2 from
http://www.lighttek.com which is
brilliant.  If you use WinAmp, you can
change the font type/size in the playlist and also have the option of
doublesize to help a bit more.  There is also a plugin called WinAmpOnTV
which is a GUI for WinAmp for better display on TV.  HTH.
