Bought a laptop with a dead screen off ebay to
act
as a firewall between my lan and broadband. And
possibly as
a low voltage web enabled HA box. When I got
the laptop
the chap said that the screen did work but was really dim. As I
was
planning to run netmeeting to access it I was quite happy to have it with
no
screen but out of interest I whipped the screen apart carefully
to 'see how
it worked'. First I saw it was a good quality 12" TFT
screen..
Here I had a revalation. Laptop screens
have
a lamp in them (always thought of the screen as LED,
rather
than LCD...) Powered the screen back on and looked closely and saw a
perfect but unilluminated image.
Rooted about on the net for a few hours and
found
it could be the inverter circuit or the lamp. Then I found a
stateside
company that sold the lamps for $9.. $25 shipping
though.
So... Anyone know a uk supplier of these
laptop lamps.. Preferably one that will accept none trade
orders (or
someone with a trade account at such a supplier that'll put an order
through for
me).
I would order it from the states but am
worried
something so thin (3mm) and delicate may not survive the
journey..
Also not having a tft screen not attached to a
laptop - which is cheaper to run? CRT or LCD?
Thanks
Maf
