Hi Ben.
It would work...sort of, but as he himself points out...

it only has a < 1m reception range.
it is prone to false triggering from sunlight.
permanent IR such as sunlight can cause it to burn out.

It is similar to the first IR repeater I build before the interated
receiver/decoder chips became available.

The TSOP1838 sensors we already use have a superb range and are almost
totally immune to sunlight. The only way sunlight really affects the TSOP
is
that it "blinds" it to the received signal, it will not cause a
permanent
output that can destroy your IR diodes.
