Erm the answer to your question is how long is a pice of string ??
Seriously though it all depends on what is inside the box. An average 1
gig athlon, with a 7200rpm drive will quite happily chew up 250w if the
processor is under load and the HD is regularly being accessed, e.g seti
crunching and a pretty graphics card like a GF3 is being
used. Conversley if you are using full power management and rhe
machine regularly sleeps and spins down its HD it can consume under 100w.
My asus terminator server, running win2k pro, a 700mhz duron and a 40gig
7200 rpm hd and 1/3 gig pc133 cas2 memory only has a 150 w psu in it and it
runs all day long, every day. So power usage is dependant on what software
is running, what processor is running, what graphics card is running and
how many pci slots are full and how many fans are in it. If I remember
correctly a GF3 draws about 40% more power than a GF2 GTS.

£120 a year
sounds a bit high and seems to have been worked out just on the maximum
rating of most PSUs - for example:
We pay 5.17p/unit which would
mean that a PC over a year uses 2321kw. That works out at 6.5Kw/day or
260w/hr which is the full rating for most PSUs.
Does anyone know
what the actual draw of a typical PC is once powered up and running? I
would have thought less than 100w.
Phil
