You're right, of course - the employer has to cope with the fact that the
employee is out for this period of time. Unless it's in the contract of
employment, the employer doesn't have to continue to pay the employee. The
employee can claim for loss of earnings, but only up to some specific
limits, so many people could end up out of pocket themselves.

Still, at least you'd be fulfilling your public duty!
