Digital camera pricing

Long term lurker here. I am looking for a new digital camera, like the
Canon Powershot S40 or the Olympus D40, but hate the uk prices - the
Olympus can be had in the US for around 600 dollars, best price I have
found here is 579 pounds.
Anyone have any views on a) buying stuff like this from the States, and
b) what the customs/VAT/etc charges would be? Or do I just apply the
lubricant and brace myself?
