I'm in exactly the same boat. I plan to hack the box in a year or so's
tim=
e
once the warranty is finished, so I expect it'll last at least a few years,
assuming TiVo (the company) keep going. Therefore, I guess I'll be
keeping=
it
well over 20 months, so should go for the lifetime option? I think if the
=
box
did fail after 12 months it's more likely it would be the HD anyway (ie
use=
r
repairable), so wouldn't expect to swap the box for another. Even if I
did=
,
TiVo seem fairly supportive of hacking (as much as they can be in a very
'distant' way). so I would hope for a little latitude if I've taken the
lif=
etime
sub and the box fails after just a year or two (I've not yet worked out
whe=
re
the tamper seal is, but I'll do my best not to break it when I do add the
drive).

The biggest justification I've got is that I paid nearly =A31k for my SVHS
=
video
about 7 years, ago, so =A3400 for a TiVo and lifetime subs seems fairly
reasonable. SWMBO won't agree though, so I'll have to do the sub 'on the
quiet'!

Pete

BTW, Sky and TiVo seem closer than they should be (considering they're
effectively competitors). Sky provide the subscription and technical
suppo=
rt
for TiVo in the UK. Go figure....

Subject: [ukha_d] TiVo subscription ?

Ok, I managed to get a TiVo today from Powerhouse for =A3199 (after
much arguing with the salesdroid who said "Sky have told us they are
=A3300 and thats what we sell them at" - duh ? since when do Sky
dictate the pricing of a Thomson TiVo box ?)

So anyway, now I need to sort out my subscription, and i'm trying to
work out if I should go for the =A3200 lifetime, or the =A310 per month.

I'm very aware of how quickly technology moves, and i've also heard
that the subscription is tied to the box, so should I knacker the
box up (read : hacking), then my =A3200 is up the swanny, or is this
not the case.

Any advice would be helpful, as I am planning on hooking it up
tommorow.

Regards
Geraint.
