I went for the lifetime. I would seriously hope that the unit lasts more
than 20 months, so it makes financial sense.

Yes, subscriptions are tied to the box (there a chip on the circuit board
with your serial number). Should you, sorry, when you upgrade your hard
disks (quite an easy procedure), as long as you keep your originals you can
restore a good image at any time (only losing your saved recordings). So
don't worry to much about having a play.
