Anyone got recommendations for the best home security option?

What I mean is, how to handle the alarm triggering and what to do.  I am currently considering options for installing an alarm system and need to know what kit I should be installing (Cameras, sirens, trigger to monitoring station etc.)

Speaking to a friend in the business, he suggests that monitored systems have a number of restrictions and end up being quite costly for service contracts and having to be reset by official engineers each time they are triggered etc.  He also suggests that some companies make you agree to have them officially serviced every 6 months etc.  Just thinking this might be a bit tricky if I go the Comfort/HA controller route where a lot of the security logic may end up being programmed.

So my question is really, what does your system do when the alarm goes off?
Buy a system with a digicom or speechdialer, that way it can alert your mobile if the alarm is triggered and you can listen in etc
Should I be buying security cameras and recording video on alarm, or phoning my neighbours and getting them to come round, or just turning on all the lights and hoping that the intuders get scared off?
If they want to get in, they will..period. It just depends how badly and who they are. I went to a burglary where the thief had gone after toby jugs, he had opened the collectors books on rare jugs, studied it, selected the most expensive 2 and left the other 30 or so jugs !!

Camera wise I tend to use the Adeva CAM8's. A cheap and cheerful stand-alone unit, cameras have PIR activation and only record when the PIR is triggered. I regularly use these for covert survielance situations (to good success) as the cameras are not too obtrusive, have built in IR iluminators and have pretty good resolution, even in low light. The system is easy to install and can be set to home, away, scan and manual modes, plus the cameras can be set to activate at certain times in different modes and they will take a 12 volt trigger off an alarm pannel, to put them into away mode, so when you arm your alarm the sysrem goes into away mode. They have RF in and out plus SCART connectors. My local retailer sells them to me at £300 +VAT for a unit plus 3 cameras, which is pretty cheap for a good quality camera system. Plus the cameras have audio and cam1 can be audio triggered (good for baby monitoring). When the cameras are triggered you can set them to change the TV channel so that yo u can see what is being monitored. These cameras are not like the cheap systems sold by the  DIY sheds (Although maplins sell them at much higher cost !!)

Other than comfort, are there any other alarm systems that ppl rate?
Personally I rate the Gardiner Technologies 800 series pannels..but they aren't cheap. They seem to be a popular choice for most commercial  and shop-premises (you can tell by the keypads).
Any help appreciated as always,
-Dan
