Help - Jumping Mouse

My HA PC is running W2K Pro and yesterday the mouse cursor started to
jump around the screen.  Every few seconds it jumps about half way
down the screen even when on the log screen after boot up.

Obviously this is driving me nuts and you can't click on anything.
I've tried a different mouse but it still does it.

Someone help before I throw the thing out the window.
