Scott,

I bought one of these about 6 months ago and it does seem to have done the trick. You attach the main unit via clips to your main inlet pipe, then wrap one set of coils clockwise and the second set anticlockwise about 20cm further on down the pipe.  The unit cost £39.95 and was actually a readers offer via The Sun newspaper - I am sure they will still be selling these. If not I can get the details of the unit this evening.

Mark

Living in a horrendously hard water area, I'd be interested in
knowing what this product is.

Thanks.

Hi Phil

My parents moved into a bungalow of similar age. They fitted one of the
electronic devices. It simply plugs into the mains and you wrap a wire a few
turns around one of the pipes. It worked wonders and did descale all the
pipes etc. It was most noticeable in one of the old cisterns were you could
see the thick build up but after a few months it was totally clean. All the
unit does it output different frequencies into the wire up to a few KHz. I
was going to build a unit with a PIC but never got around to it. If you're
interested I'll find out the name and model etc.

I have a 30 year old house with 30 year old (microbore) central heating
... We also live in a hard water area.

I had been thinking of sticking some heating system descaler but it had
been mentioned to me that the stuff can frequently open up leaks that
had previously been sealed with scale so up to now I have resisted.

I have since found out that our neighbours two doors down had their
microbore system completely fur up last year and it cost them £800 to
have it pressure flushed to get rid of the buildup so does anyone have
any recommendations for what to use to descale/defur a central heating
system? (I'll be hitting B&Q later today for a bog conversion kit so B&Q
sourced product would be an advantage!)

Phil
