Yeah I have heard of these but I believe that they're only really
suitable for preventing "clean" systems furring up in the first
place.

Given that our house was built at the same time as the neighbours and as
far as I can tell we're both on our third hot water cylinder (!?!?) then
I would guess that our heating system will be pretty scaled. (I doubt it
has been in any way maintained.)
