I expect the adoption of USB2-enabled PCs/laptops to be quicker than
that of Firewire for economic reasons. Any manufacturer will
realistically have four options:

1: Implement USB1

2: Implement USB1 and Firewire

3: Implement USB2

4: Implement USB2 and Firewire

Manufacturers looking to market a cheap PC will choose "1"
Manufacturers looking to market a video-editing PC will choose 2 or 4
Manufacturers looking to market a "fast PC" will choose 3

In determing which of Firewire and USB2 will win market share, the cost
comparison you need to make is not between USB1 and USB2, or even
between USB2 and Firewire, but between "USB1 _AND_ Firewire vs.
"USB2".

Implementation of USB2 gives a route to implement a "high-speed"
interface without keeping a requirement to implement USB1 as well.

(I believe that the market for Firewire-only devices (ie without any
form of USB) is vanishingly small.)

Regards,

Mark
