There
is also some Sw available to do this
Roger

That was the application I bought mine for. I
wasn't intending to keep track of everything, because things like beer are
unlikely to be scanned at the point of consumption. However, it would be
handy
for scanning what tins and the like comes into the house, so that you can
more
accurately gauge what recpies we are capable of. Hopefully to prevent the
situation of discovering a dozen can/jars of stuff well past its sell by
date
hiding at the back of the cupboard.
I'd thought of a sort of "I have some lamb,
what
recipes can we do tonight" type app. A winner with the wife since she'd
love
an on-line searchable recipe application, and it'd bring be closer to a
touch
screen in the kitchen ;-)

I've seen people suggest using these for "inventory control" of
their
food cupboards in the kitchen but what about things like cheese from the
Deli counter where you have two problems:
1) The barcode contains the price so changes each time you
purchase another batch.
2)
You don't take it out and eat the whole thing in one go. (Well, maybe I do
but that's just me.)
Phil
Ray,
Do I take it that this means that this cannot be
used with an IBM compatible PC? - the manual seems to suggest that you can
connect it in between the keyboard and the pc, is this
true?
(Seeing loads of HA apps for this, but thinks
there is a catch!!)
Daniel
Craig,
I didn't get any docs come with it at all
(hence why I foolishly plugged it straight into my PC's serial port).
However, a bit of web searching turned up PDF manuals for it... Just
wish I'd looked first :-(

Ray, I purchased this model a couple of months back,
when the link was originally posted to the group. I assummed it just
connected in-line with the keyboard, but looking at the connectors this
did not look right, so it is still sitting in a box somewhere. Do you
have any docs with yours on how to connect to a PC?

Thought people might be interested to
know that I came across a supplier of cheap barcode scanners... £20 for
a second hand "guaranteed to work" unit.
I'd like to report how well they work, only I read the bit about it
supporting TTL RS232 *after* I plugged it in to my PCs RS232 port?
Anyone care to venture the odds on it still being alive? Oops.

Just don't plug them straight into a 12v serial port like I just did ;-)
