I agree, the thing that would be most useful for me is for my DVD/CD collection, using software something like:
 
 
Although what I would really like is if there was some way it would connect to IMDB/CDDB to automatically fill in the correct details as well............

I was more thinking about the hundreds of books we have..... and CDs - reading the barcodes into a dB
 
Food *would* be a nightmare, and would take some time to set up, keeping track of all the barcodes!! and as you say what about the specials....
