There is a java based terminal emulator at http://www.mud.de/se/jta/ which is freeware and open source.

this seems ok but I've only played with it for a few hours about two months ago.

it supports re definable keys from a config file but I had to change the code to support the weird combinations I need. (probably ok for alt function key combinations though)

not sure about user font selections, this app resizes the font to draw an 80*25 screen as large as possible whenever you resize.

Of course you'd have to install a jvm on each client. (if you go this route and need it on more than four or five pc's I'd suggest you take a look at webstart - free from www.javasoft.com) or you could probably run it as an applet
