You just need to make up a couple of leads:

RS232 female -> RJ45 plug
RJ45 plug -> RS232 male

RS232   CAT5
pin1 -> white orange
pin2 -> orange
pin3 -> white green
pin4 -> blue
pin5 -> white blue
pin6 -> green
pin7 -> white brown
pin8 -> brown
pin9 -> not connected

connect: PC -> RJ45 socket -> patch panel -> RJ45 socket ->
RedRat

probably about £3 for the bits + CAT5 cable.

I have used this method to extend the serial connections for a Palm V, LCD
display and Quasar temp board up to about 20m.

I've seen some products that run serial over cat5 but they are fairly
expensive (£500+ I think) and extend VGA also. Are there any products
that can do this for less than that.
