Nah, I just cut the end off the light sensor (which I dont use) and shorted the wires together (bodge-o-matic sylie)  Incidently, leaving the wires shorted still had the desired effect.  
 
I had the same idea as you Re: AM12 with relay, so I'll let you know how I get on.  Off to Craplins now to buy the relay!
