That's the route I took - an MS14A (US frequency) motion sensor, an MR26A receiver plugged into the Homeseer PC's serial port, and an X10 chime unit. Homeseer can initiate other events when the PIR triggers, and I can use the integral dawn/dusk sensor to switch lights on/off. If I'm outside, I can plug the chime unit into a mains socket in the shed....
 
Admittedly it doesn't tell you when the batteries are running low!
