100 yards should be possible with good quality cards with an unobstructed
fresnel (line of sight plus a bit).  Of course, you'll have houses in the
way, so the simplest way would be with a couple of antennae made from
Pringles cans or CD spindles (yes, seriously!) on your roof.

Indeed, if you're opposite eachother, you could point aerials out th
window,
but if you're on the same side of the road, you'll need to get on the roof.
Be careful of lorries breaking your connection though if you point aerials
across the street.

In the short term, but long term, how can you beat a 5Mbps permanent
connection for almost no running cost?
