I'd be surprised if you can get ppl to subscribe to a list they have previously had free, even if it were ad free.
A one off payment maybe from a few charitable souls may do the job, but you can get many free mailing list proggies for *nix which someone with broadband could run. 
Any files etc that ppl want could be stuck on a website somewhere - hell even keep the yahoo space for this only & point ppl on the list to it if they want downloads....

I'm going yo float an idea here, that I'd be willing to look into futher
and possibly host.

How about a dedicated ukha server, that would carry the news group,
current mailing list, new mailing lists, forum, files area, even give
you your own web space.

Obviously this would have to be a subscription service of some kind.

What do people think.
