RE: X10 Din rail wiring questions

Questions:
- I may run CAT5 to each switch location too, though I am not sure
what it might be used for at present. Does anyone have any suggestion
as to why this might or might not be a good idea? Note that this wire
will almost certainly have to run next to the T&E for a significant
part of it's length.

Graham,

This is not supposed to be a good idea because the mains interference will generate noise in the CAT-5 cable.

Crossing mains @ 90degrees is okay, but long parallel runs should be kept at least a foot apart if possible.
Having said that, it will probably depend on the application as to whether or not it matters.  For PC networks obviously no noise is good noise - for IR distribution, it may not matter.
I get some noise on my phone circuits due, I _think_ to the electrician ignoring me when I told him to keep the CAT 5 away from the power runs to the bedroom.  Can't prove it of course & not enough knowlege of the stuff to know if that is actually the case, or if I've just cocked something up....

I'm sure Mr Doxey will be able to give u a more informed response.....

Tony
