Indeed, very Cisco. Most Cisco routers come withe a PCMCIA slot which can
be used to upgrade the IOS version if you've completly fragged the flash
&
ROM backup (quite how you do that I'm not sure...)  It's also much faster
the XMODEM'ing the IOS image up.
