How about using USB to Serial adaptors, and hubs? I can see no reason
(note: I haven't tried it) why you can't run lots of USB->Serial
adaptors from one PC, using USB hubs to connect them together. The only
snag that I can see is that because USB readdresses everything on boot,
if you reboot your PC, the cable->serial port mapping might change. I
don't know how Windows would cope with this.
