Tony,
I see that you are ordering AP from
John as well. Will that Linksys AP have that option to restrict it by MAC
address?

At least some (and probably all)
APs allow you to restrict access by MAC address. There's probably
some sort of registration process (dunno yet, haven't got mine!) to
register the card with the AP so they can talk the same encrytption levels
etc.....
Should be easy enough - though of
course ppl hacking in could still be a problem - though that applies
whether you have an AP or not.

So, your suggestion is to use AP,
and connect it to my existing switch on fixed network. And then put
wireless card in Fujitsu tablet.
But I need to program switch then
to accept traffic from my wireless card only, not someone else's in
neighbourhood.
That can be tricky...

Several mails merged -

PCMCIA card.
You can get USB adapters. Not played with em
yet, but ~ £90.

Yup Use different channel & switch
on the portable using suppliers software

secrets....Probably applies to corporations.

could pick up my data and access my fixed network, but it's not so trivial,
because data are encripted before transmitted.

If routed to your ibroadband there is the risk
that some script kiddy or other scally will use your connection to piggy
back to do dodgy things. Not to your data but from your connection so law
turns up on your door. Some security is recommended. Same reason you should
have personnal firewall software. Don't make life easy for these b*stards.
There is a practice called war driving where you put a laptop in car &
drive around mapping unsecure networks to use. The sooftware for this is
easily available (and legitiamtely used by security analysts &
net admins)
