I'd suggest plugging it in going through initial setup, getting some 
guide data etc, to confirm that everything is working fine and your box
isn't DOA before invalidating your warranty.

Once you've confirmed it's all working, I wouldn't wait the 12 months 
for the warranty to be up, just upgrade it, it's really straightforward.
