Re: Re: Building Node0

Don't use the crowbar!!

If your boards are exposed (rather than hidden under carpets) the crowbar w= ill leave *BIG* indentations where you lever and look really bad

The technique is ;

Cut off the T&G on both sides of the board you want to lift (if you hav= e T&G) using a floorboard saw
If there is a cut in the board, start lifting there - If not, start midway = along the length you want to lift
Use two wide bolsters - one either side, slipped in adjacent to a joist
Now, gently lever and ease the board up. ( I often stand on the bolsters so= 'gentle' may not be quite the right word here!)
Move along the board, levering adjacent to joists.
When you get to a point you want to cut, keep the board levered up (help is= usefull here) and use the floorboard saw to cut across the board
Make the cut 1/2 way thru the joist - NO ! don't cut the joist - I mean mak= e it so that either end of the cut floorboard rests on the joist!
Now go back and do the same at the other end.

SAFETY POINT
Once the board is up, take out the nails - Rusty nails thru the bottom of t= rainers HURT!

With practice, you can lift a board leaving minimal marks

Sorry it's so detailed (and maybe boring) but I've seen sooo many bodge job= s on lifting boards that ruin an otherwise good job.

One other thing, RS do a neat nail puller 794-648 =A327.72 +VAT

Oh! another thing, If you are trying to lift a board that goes under the sk= irting, it's often neater to punch down the old nails rather than try to ge= t them out.

Finally, (at last), if you think you may need to lift the boards again, scr= ew them back down rather than nail (use No 10 x 2"). If the boards are= exposed, use brass screws but make sure that you pilot drill and countersi= nk first and use a lubricant otherwise you may shear the brass screws.

Can't you tell I used to be a sparks!

Cheers

Neil

You can get a floorboard saw from any of the sheds for a couple of q= uid,
has a specially shaped end for cutting tongues between boards. The o= ther
thing I've heard of is an "electrician's skate" which is s= omething that
is rolled along the joints to cut the tongues. After that, a bit of =
gentle levering (you can use your crowbar if you want... ;) near the=
nail points should pop the nails up a bit which you can then use a c= law
  hammer to remove.
