I guess you mean a Combination Boiler: no cold water tank in loft; no hot
water storage tank; hot water in taps "on demand".

Although I love my Combination Boiler for the hot water on demand and low
overall running cost, when they go wrong it is usually more expensive than a
standard system so if you have a family, a "traditional" system with timed
water heating (with possible immersion heater supplement) and hot/cold water
tanks might work out cheaper in the long run.

With a combination boiler, it is usual to use either a simple mixer shower
or an elecric shower with cold water input only to take advantage of mains
pressure to provide the power which are usually as good as/better than a lot
of "power showers". If you do need more power then I think you need to add a
cold water tank and use a cold feed only for the pump to get the power. Most
shower systems will indicate in their requirements if they are compatible
with a combination boiler.

As for X10, if you merely wish to replace the usual master power swtch, you
just need a module with an appropriate rating to do so. How you turn the
system on and off is of course open to debate since it could be driven by
motion sensor, local control, timers etc. It is somthing on my to do list
and the activation system is the main reason I have yet to implement it.
