Yes, whole room audio conferencing is very impressive, isnt it.
Genuine full duplex telephony over a large space with speakers and
mics.

The technology is a combination of hybrids, mix-minus (both of which
I understand) and echo cancellation (which is not science but black
magic).

Fortunately, this stuff all arrives in a 1u high (always black,
irrespective of manufacturer) rack box or several, which just works. 
Unfortunately, its outrageously expensive.

Have a look at http://www.rane.com for an example.

The next step down from whole room audioconference is phone
conferencinhg, and the standard unit ther is the starfish, usually
with a BT badge on it, cant remember its proper name, but it too is
expensive (though only(!) several hundred pounds) but has all the
right technology in a single box.
