The biggest problem is the payload applied TO the scales in the first place.

I can safely say that as I am one of the worst offenders :-)

If you EVER release a product that broadcasts weight over a xAP network,
then I consider it a VITAL requirement that the payload have 256-bit
encryption AS A MINIMUM.

I have been after the same, and it on my project list - if you find
anything useful please let me know! I plan to modify a set of
electronic scales with an LED display from Argos -- LED is easier to
interface electrically than LCD, and are likely to be multiplexed,
and connect to a Rabbit to provide a direct ethernet interface.
