RE: DVD drive
... and I was not meaning to vehemently defend it - agreed, it does
have
some shortcomings :-)
Out of interest - I presume you bin all the menus and extras when you
rip your DVD? I've done a little of this in the past but didn't find
anything that will maintain the structure of the DVD - but it is a
while
since I played with all the software available. However, most DVD
extras
aren't worth keeping!!! (with exception of discs like the THX demo
disc).

Don't get me wrong Paul, I'm not slagging the product at all just
pointing out that it does not do like for like mainly for the benefit
of
those who don't know the differences between DVD5 and DVD9 as most of
those people seem to think that you can simply do a disc-to-disc exact
copy.
Personally I rip to HDD, lower the compression/framerate as needed to
fit *JUST* the movie on a single DVD5 and so far the results have been
pretty good with one or two little annoyances. Not as fast and as easy
as using the likes of DVDXCopy but its horses for courses really with
this stuff IMO and I find having the copy on one disc advantageous.
As for dual-layer burners, if my information is correct we have no
chance of ever seeing them! IIRC Hollywood came to some
"arrangement"
with the DVD Council that the dual layer format they use would not be
made available commercially at any time. Unless of course one of the
Chinese boys decides to break that agreement!

Yup, they seem to be, by all accounts, pretty on the ball.
