I've used dvdxcopy with good results to transfer to DVD-R.
If I want to store the DVD on hard drive for playback via a PC I use
dvd-decrypter http://www.dvddecrypter.com/ to rip
the DVD to a single
ISO image. This contains an exact image of the DVD including all menus
and extras but removes the Region settings,
I then use daemon tools http://www.daemon-tools.com to mount
the iso
image as a virtual DVD drive on any PC I want to play back on. No
messing with DVD file structures or anything nasty like that. The iso
image just looks like a mounted DVD. You can even copy the iso image to
dvd-R using dvdxcopy!!
Rather cool!
Of course, these are only used to back up bona-fide DVDs personally
owned by me and for archival purposes, yadayada......
