In theory, the ReplayGain idea should be a nice way round this. It
doesn't normalize the sound, but instead stores information that allows
the track volume to be adjusted to (a) play at the intended level with
other tracks from the album, or (b) play at a level consistent with
other tracks in your collection.

On the other hand, I don't know if the proposal has been implemented in
many players to date. Grip seems to support the calculation of the
replaygain data (at least I think that is what the "Calculate gain
adjustment" option is for), but I'm not sure how to store or use that
information.
